A platform may describe a position as one lot, five contracts, or 0.20 units, but those figures mean little until the underlying contract size is known. When trading a contract for differences product, contract size determines how much market exposure sits behind each unit and how strongly the account responds when price moves.
This is where beginners often misread the trade ticket. A small margin requirement can make a position appear modest, even though its notional value is many times larger. The margin is only the capital reserved to support the trade. Contract size determines what the trader actually controls.
Contract Specifications Define the Exposure
Contract size states how much of the underlying market one CFD unit or lot represents. For an equity product, one contract may correspond to one share. An index contract might assign a fixed cash value to each index point, while a commodity lot may represent a specified number of barrels, ounces, or metric units.
Suppose an index CFD is valued at $10 per point. A two-contract position gains or loses $20 whenever the index moves one point. A 50-point decline would create a $1,000 loss before spreads, commissions, or financing charges.
The number of contracts looked small. The point value was not.
Specifications vary between brokers and instruments, including products that reference the same underlying market. Assuming that one lot carries the same exposure everywhere can produce a substantial sizing error. Experienced traders read the instrument details before calculating the stop, rather than relying on habits formed on another platform.
Notional Value Is Different From Margin
Notional value measures the full economic exposure of the position. It can usually be estimated by multiplying the market price by the contract size and number of contracts, with adjustments for instruments quoted through point values or currency conversions.
Margin represents only a percentage of that exposure. If a position worth $50,000 requires 5 percent margin, the platform may reserve $2,500. The remaining exposure has not disappeared. A 2 percent adverse move in the underlying still changes the position by roughly $1,000, subject to the product’s exact specification.
Counterintuitively, a lower margin requirement does not make the trade less risky. It merely allows the same exposure to be opened with less account capital. The market movement has not become smaller. The trader has been given more leverage over it.
That distinction becomes uncomfortable only after price moves.
Volatility Reveals Sizing Errors Quickly
Consider a crude oil CFD consolidating before an unexpected inventory release. The report shows a larger draw than markets anticipated, and oil breaks above the range. A trader buys two lots, expecting the move to continue, but calculates risk from the quoted price alone without checking how many barrels each lot represents.
The breakout initially holds, then price sweeps the session high and reverses as traders focus on weaker refinery demand. Oil falls $1.20 from the entry. If each lot represents 100 barrels, the loss is $240. If each represents 1,000 barrels, the same chart movement creates a $2,400 loss.
Nothing about the technical setup changed between those calculations.
A beginner tends to focus on whether the breakout was genuine. An experienced trader first asks whether the position could survive a normal post-release reversal. Correct direction cannot repair exposure that was miscalculated before entry.
Currency Conversion Can Change the Result
The instrument’s profit currency may differ from the account’s base currency. A position on a European share could generate gains and losses in euros while the account is denominated in dollars. The platform then converts the result using the prevailing exchange rate.
This creates a second moving component. The underlying asset may rise as expected, but a change in the conversion rate can increase or reduce the account-level result. The effect is usually modest on short trades, although it becomes more relevant for larger positions or longer holding periods.
Financing costs also scale with notional exposure, not merely with deposited margin. Holding a large leveraged position overnight can produce charges that appear disproportionate to the cash initially reserved.
Before opening a contract for differences position, record five figures: contract size, number of contracts, point or tick value, stop distance, and account-currency conversion rate. Multiply the stop distance by the value per point and total contracts to estimate the cash at risk. Then compare that loss with account equity, not with required margin. If the calculation produces more exposure than planned, reduce the contract count before changing the stop that defines where the trade idea becomes invalid.
